A catch all response to various posts about Amy Winehouse
A car bomb went off and killed troops in Yamen, police fired in protesters in Syria, hundreds of people were injured in clashes with the police in Egypt, 93 people have been murdered in Norway and helpless children are starving to death in Somalia. But regardless of all of this, of people fighting against oppression, or committing great atrocities, people will care that good musician has died young. This is just like we cared when Jim Morrion, Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Syd Barrett, Kurt Cobain or any other wonderful musician passed. Media fixation may be disproportionate to what will really affect the world, but that doesn’t mean you can value any human life more than another, or claim a life is worth less because of a drug problem, or do the opposite and elevate others to the point of sainthood for being a British soldier. OK, she was “just” a musician, are the dead in Syria “just” protesters, and the dead in Somalia “just” poor Africans?
